Shillington Trophy - Round 12 - 05/10/2019

Hi Folks,

Just a short report today on a somewhat abbreviated round 12 of the Shillington Trophy for 6 Metres.

Eight gathered at the Western jetties, looking forward to a good morning's sailing.  Well, the weather was fine but the wind was light by the time it got to us having passed the houses and trees to our Easterly side; and it got lighter!

A mere six races were achieved in the two hours from start until a little after twelve when the decision was taken to wrap it up for the day as our motive power all but disappeared completely.

Our course from Whites 3 & 4, up to White 7 in the mouth of the Eastern Channel, across to White 6 and then down to the Ones gate in Doom Bay, returning to White 7 before going to Doom again to finsih across the start line gave lots of opportunites to gain and lose places.  Probably the most spectacular was in race 4 when Geoff R. had led the way from the first leg, chased by Mike K. who was overtaken down the second run to Doom by 'the rest'.  Geoff R. and 'the rest' headed for the left hand gate mark which was obviously going to be crowded which left Geoff E. and Mike K. taking the right hand gate mark in the hope of keeping away from the bundle in the corner at Doom.  To their surprise Geoff E. and Mike K. suddenly saw a hope of an early finish but neither could forsee that the ever so delicate wind shift would favour both but would sweep Mike through to windward of Geoff E. and finish first.  That old phrase of "the first shall be last and the last shall be first" came true, much to the chagrin of Geoff R.

At the end of the morning Mike K. saw his first session win with a 6 Metre for nearly twenty years and Mike E. going home to replace a 'blown up' winch in preparation for tomorrow's Midland District 6 Metre meeting at Bournville.  Geoff Raygada took second overall for the morning from Stephen Wheeler on countback with Geoff Earle the only other skipper to be 'in the teens'.

Cheers,

Mike

Shillington Cup Rounds 10 and 11

These events were cancelled.

Round 9 Shillington Cup for 6M / Midland district event

Saturday saw Round 9 of the Shillington Cup for 6M yachst, open to Two Islands members but also it was an open meeting within the Midland District series.

We had a good turnout of seven Two Islands skippers as well as Shaun Holbeche who joined us from Fleetwood, with Geoff Raygada performing Race Officer duty.

We were blessed with a decent northerly breeze blowing more or less straight across the lake, which allowed us to set courses which avoided most of the wind shadows and allowed good upwind beats, with plenty of opportunities to get it wrong, so there was plenty of place changes up to the windward mark.

Throughout the day the courses remained more or less the same. Starting between red 6 and a temporary buoy near the jetty edge, initially sailing out to red 3, red 2 as a spreader then running into the eastern bay to round red 7. This course was sailed for two laps, with a short up wind finish. As the wind swung a bit more easterly as the day progressed, we moved everything one buoy to the right, which worked well for the rest of the afternoon.
It was lovely to see Dave Alexander's new Romanza out for the first outing, finished like a fine piece of furniture, and sailing very nicely, sadly dave could only sail for the morning session.

As usual there was little to chose speed wise between any of the different designs , two Renaissance, two Rocco's, two Ravenna's, a Siskin and a Romanza.

As usual the  difference between leading the fleet and following behind replied to the skill of the skipper although to some extent eyesight and distance perception came into play, especially at the windward mark, with some struggling more than others. Doing turns with a 6M really hurts, so those who managed to keep clear of the buoys, or at least sail the right side of them reaped the rewards.

As the results show it was an almost demonstration sail from the clear winner Shaun Holbeche. Close on his tail, sailing consistantly at the front end of the fleet was Mike Ewart, who was runner up and winner of the round of the Shillington Cup.

Despite a good run of first places, Geoff Earle, just ended up a single point behind Mike Kemp.

Saturday June 15th - Round 2 Midland District 6M Champion Skipper and Shillington Cup Round 8

Hi Folks,

The second event in this new series was a multi purpose event serving as an open meeting for all six metre skippers, round 2 of the Midland District Champion Skipper  series, and a round of the 2 Islands regular monthly six metre Shillingham Cup.

Well with all these prodigious things happening it had to be good, I have been regaled of the horrendous weather the UK has been experiencing of the last week or so, well it was better than that, the sun shone for some of the time, black clouds threatened for some of the time and the wind was in the wrong direction most of the time.

We had 3 skippers retire from the event, one through a transmitter problem and 2 through being unwell, Bill and Geoff Raygada hope you both feel better soon, Paul fix the tranny.

A good selection of designs racing today 2 Rococo, 2 Romanza,  1 Ravenna, 3 Renaissance,  1 Dann 6, and 1 Siskin,
The racing was close throughout the day, Mark got good consistent starts and everybody else was chasing him most of the morning then Shaun switched on his after burners and the two of them were very close from then on, Mike Kemp was his usual consistent self , Geoff Earle was making a very welcome return to six metre racing and had some good races, Stan Cockeram on his first visit to 2 Islands learnt why the islands are mentioned in our club name, they are important, and with the wind direction the way it was coming over the houses and around the island even the Bournville skippers were suffering.

Still a good days sailing very polite with all incidents settled amicably and looking forward to a better wind for the next event which is at 2 Islands Saturday 13th July put it in your calendar, and thanks to all the competitors for a pleasant day as PRO. I get to sail in the next one.

Cheers,

Mike Ewart

Shillington Cup 25th May 2019

A good turnout with people back from holidays and family commitments for this months edition of the Shillington Cup.

The wind was from the westerly end of the lake not the best direction so we went to pauls spit, and used various courses just trying to maintain at least one beat in the course, the direction was nt brilliant but the rest of the conditions were bright sunshine a nice top suit breeze for most of the day.

Bob Lamb had a few problems early on and missed a couple of races and had tranny battery failure towards the end but with some assidious tuning and bits of string we got his yacht going better toward the end, Richard Dolman started well but had a winch failure and retired after 3 races.

The rest of us carried on till 2pm by which time we had completed 15 races, the wind had some very strange eddies and at various stages we went from a run to a beat to a run on the same leg. Much fun had by all, Mike Kemp with his new sails on a reworked rig was going well Mike Ewart with a new smoky rig was smoking, first race with the new sails and I hope it wasnt beginners luck, ( thank you GB). Geoff Raygada got the Romanza tracking well and finished with a deserved 3rd, looking through the results sheet doesnt really tell the whole story as there were some very close finishes and some quite remarkable turnarounds when a shift was spotted or missed, a great days sailing with the boys toys, and a Happy Birthday to Mike Kemp.

Round 6 Saturday 6th April

Gents

Only two turned up on Saturday – Colin Davies, Paul Risdale

As it was a good day we decided to sail anyway.
Had an endurance race. Start between the two inner whites, up to the outer red 5, across  to red 3, back to white two near the jetty.
After two hours there was nothing in it – both boats being evenly matched, so we called it a dead heat, both equal first.

Hopefully there will be a bigger fleet next time.

Regards

Paul

Round 5 Saturday March 23rd

Mike Ewart reports

"Four hardy souls today, for what the best wind we have had for some time.  It was top of top suit and coming from the hotel on the north bank towards red 1 in the bay.  This allowed us to use the whites (bouys) for starting out to red 4 then red 5 then red 1 with a sausage on red 4,

Even though I (Mike Ewart) am writing this I must admit Christina (Mike's boat, not lady friend) was going like a train today and I had a fantastic series. The starts were interesting, the wind was tending to veer just before the start leaving us all out of position and the beats were difficult with lots of place changing plus a ticklish downwind section where the wrong gybe would lose you distance quite quickly.

Paul is getting to grips with his Siskin and downwind it was going particulary well, Bob had his first real outing with Nimrod and is coming along well, a few mods on the jib and patience with the rudder and he will improve, the boat feels good on the water and most of the water was staying in the lake today, along with Pauls sunglasses.

A good day had by all after the postponement for the storm last week."

Shillington cup 16th Feb 2019 Round 4 Saturday February 16th

Hi All
attached results from today .

A small but select group today, a Ravenna a Romanza and a Siskin.

Paul Geoff and myself spent a very enjoyable time with a wind coming from the WSW which didn't look very promising at first, but we set a course from 1 and 3 start up into the bay of doom to port then down to the new red 6 then the new red 4 back to red 1 and red 4 and finish, the course actually proved very good and we had some great windward legs especially as the wind strength increased during the day.

My Ravenna was justifying its position as the now solitary six metre in the Ewart household and went beautifully all day, Paul was getting the hang of his Siskin, its maiden race, and Geoff got his Romanza going well, the racing was a lot closer than the results seem to show, with a number of position changes on all legs throughout the day.

We actually called a halt at 11 races as Geoff had a shroud fail as a result of a collision so we called it a day.

I must report the new bouys are very visible and they spin very easily when contacted, well done to the bouy layers last week.

regards
Mike Ewart

Round 3 Saturday 12th Jan 2019

With several regular skippers either away on holiday or on family duties, today"s attendance was limited to a very small and select band of Colin Davies, Paul Risdale and Geoff Raygada.

Since the weather was gloomy but not either too cold , there was a decent breeze and there were three of us, it was time to go racing.

Geoff was soon to discover that the correct transmitter for the boat had been left at home but luckily the rescue boat transmitter was the correct type so all that needed doing was a bit of re binding and setting up.

Had the bank not been so muddy we would have walked over to the spit, to make best use of the westerly breeze, however we made the best of the conditions, although we did seem to make use of most of the buoys in a variety of courses throughout the morning to try and provide a decent beat.

Some elements of the course didn't change, first windward mark was red 1, in the western bay running down to red 8 in the other bay. The second leg being changed several times to provide an upwind leg that required some tactical sailing.

Paul's Revival and the Rocco's of Colin and Geoff were very evenly matched, often with only a canvass separating the boats, even after a long course, such is the closeness of 6 M racing.

All in all, a very pleasant and enjoyable morning's sailing and not even as much as heated discussion on the rules, all very gentlemanly just as it should be sailing in a lovely top suite breeze on a fresh winter's morning.

Hi all

Geoff and I shared 16 imaginary races in poor to freezing conditions, imaginary racing abandoned at 10. 08, I think you lot had more sense than us.

6 Metre - 2018-19 Shillington Cup Round 1

Hi Folks,

Here is the report and results of the first round of the 2018-2019 Shillington Cup courtesy of our 6 Metre leader, Mike Ewart.

Four of our intrepid Six Metre skippers were there today for 2018/9 first round of the Shillington Cup.

We were greeted by a nice top suit breeze mostly going down the lake, a course was set from a start between W 1 and W3 to a windward mark W5 to port then W6 as the wing down to R1 to port and a sausage on W5  finishing at the start line. (much the wiser for that thanks :Ed)

We kept the same course all day and whlst the wind did move gradually, during the day, slightly round to the north we still had a good beat.

Bob Lamb was there for his first outing with Nimrod the ex Paddy Chambers Renaissance which after solving a few teething problems was going well, but definitely leaking a bit, Mike Ewart had a good day and was managing to pick the shifts well but the racing was close between all the boats all day. Geoff reverted to his Rococo, Richard has his Ravenna as did Mike and there was very little to choose between the yachts performance, Rob Totty came down to spectate for a while, we will need to keep our eyes open for "Six" for him soon.

Keep an eye on the calendar folks don't miss the next one you know you will regret it

Cheers

Mike
