The Shillington Cup for Six Metres 2019/20
Sailing now suspended
Shillington Cup Round 4 - 15/02/2020
Mike Ewart reports:
A small but selective (?) group of sixes out on the lake today, we had to share the lake with storm Dennis, which did produce some boat flattening gusts at times, and as can be guessed with the sixes some rapid rounding up into wind, a few laid down on the lake for a rest and there was even some sixes planing/surfing downwind, brief but very exciting.
The course set was a start between white 3 and 4 up to red 1 to port red 6 to port white 5 to port and then back to red one repeat finishing between white 1 and 2.
The racing was, as I said, exciting. Sometimes it was a matter of keeping your yacht under some semblance of control, as can be seen from the results. Mike Kemp did that best today, well sailed. After that one point separated Mike E and Colin Davies, with Paul and Geoff bringing up the rear. We all learned a lot about yacht control in extremes and the
sailing was, considering the weather, very calm, (What!! no shouting?) but with quite a few interesting incidents on the finish line with places swapping when the last tack before the line was missed.
Overall not conditions I would recommend for the novice six sailor but very good, Some yacht problems, Geoff had a shorted lipo not sure how much damage done as yet, slipping bowsies the flavour of the day, Paul snapped his mainsheet twice( needs to look for something abrasive in the system) and my jib bent its clew fitting out of shape (apply string)

Saturday 18th January - 6 Metre Shillington Cup round 3
Mike Ewart reports:-
Well the weather gods were better today than they have been recently, 7 sixes out, the sun was out and the wind was reasonably fair with no huge holes and twists.
The course was set with a start from w 6 to a pole on the shore out to R 2 to port W3 to port R 7 to port R2 to port R7 to port and a beat to the finish between W6 and the pole.
The racing was very competitive with many changes of position throughout the races the start and the first beat at one stage was the critical thing then it seemed that sailing downwind was the crunch point and then at other times it was who got out of the bouys cleanly and quickly, it was all very enjoyable and friendly and as can be seen from the score
sheet closely fought with the final result being between the two Mikes by one point ( that Geoff didnt hit a bouy i the last race and I couldnt catch him).
Well done everyone, lets keep up the racing like that.

Saturday 23rd November - Shillington Cup Round 1
Mike Ewart reports :-
Hi Folks,
Having dried out after a surprisingly wet but very gentle drop of what one of those present this morning described as Welsh Drizzle, here is the report of Round One of the 2019-2020 Shillington Cup series for 6 Metre yachts.
The weather forecast has not been very obliging of recent days and once again it was very wrong but we had a turn out of 5 skippers and a light breeze from the easterly end most of the time.
The racing was very competitive and place changing on the beat and the run was quite common, it did look as though Mike K was going to win easily with 5 first out of the 10 races sailed, but he was unfortunate with the rest being 3rd places and this allowed Colin Davies to take the win after discards by 1 point from Mike Kemp who was one point ahead of Mike Ewart.
A small but good fleet with most of the time the yachts grouped together all the way round , Paul Risdale's Siskin sailing well but possibly needing a bit more tuning on these light winds and Bob Lamb struggling a bit with set up and one of his sheet lines coming loose at least twice.
A good day out, only 10 races as the wind was dying and the rain was getting wetter or so it seemed.
