Sunday 23 February - DF 95 TIRYC Bowl Round 3

Hi Folks,

It was Sunday, there were eight of us and it was relatively mild, around 12 Celcius and the wind slowly moved from its 'usual' direction round to the West: we had dry through to a short sharp shower and, eventually,
the sun.  So we started with a course we've been using for a few weeks now, starting from W3 and W4 into R1 in Doom bay, around R6, down to W6 before going back to W1 as a windward mark.  Another trip around W6 and
head to finish between W1 and W2.  By race 5 the wind was obviously on its way towards the West but not really enough for us to use R2 as windward, so we started between S and R6 and fought our way to W2 as
windward, returning to R7 as leeward, going around W1 on the first lap; after another rounding of W2 and R7 we finished between S and R6.

Probably the nicest thing one could say about that course was that it was challenging.  Fortunately by the time we ready for the next start R2 was a sensible windward mark although we switched to Starboard rounding to make use of R3 as a spreader on the first lap.  By now we had some much cleaner wind, in abundance, which made tacking difficult for all occasionally and some often, so much so that they resorted to gybing around to change tack.

The favoured 'rig of the day' was B although Mike Ewart and Rob continued with C rig until race 6, which is when the smaller rig might have been beneficial.  Towards the end of race 6 Mike Ewart's rudder servo decided it had given enough, consequently Mike's boat sailed straight to the Eastern island which it hit hard and appeared to be hooked: Rob committed his yacht to an attempted rescue and it, too, became marooned.  The next race started while Mike and Rob went for the rescue dinghy: before the race had finished and the dinghy arrived both yachts were mysteriously blown off the island, Rob's headed straight for the right hand launching platform while Mike's set off on a pretty straight port tack across to the hotel.  The only other non-B rig was carried by Mike Stevens for race 1 and 2 during which is when he decided that it really was the wrong rig and withdrew from proceedings.
Throughout the morning racing was generally pretty close with a number of closely fought finishes, all very helpfully scored for us by Fred Coker who came along to gather tips and 'how tos' by watching.  Fred even became our 'starter' after, first, the nice starter generally looked after by Rob failed and, then, the older device held in the lock-up gave up the ghost.  We all owe Fred a big 'thank you'.

Cheers,

Mike Kemp

DF95 TIRYC Bowl Round 2 Results

Good afternoon All

A great fleet of 12 boats on the water today. With so many and a brisk breeze it was decided to take one skipper off as Race Officer each race to assist with the writing of the results. It worked well.

We started from the new line of White 3 and White 4 initially up to new White 2 but this was laid in one tack for many. So we extended the windward mark to old Red 1! Then down to White 5 as a spreader then a run down to Red 4 on the perimeter and a good beat back to White 2 and repeat without the spreader.

This gave a challenging start (quite port tack biased) and a really good interesting couple of beats back when places were won and lost, tactics were all.

A real mixed bag of results with 7 different skippers winning a race out of 11 races. Mike Kemp was the most consistent and came home first with 17 points after discards. KC was second on 23 points from Dave Green also on 23 points in third place based on countback. Unfortunately we lost Dorian for two races when his boat drifted out of radio range whilst he was helping a fellow skipper - hard luck to Dorian. The two Andrews from Grafham missed the last race when Andy B snagged a buoy and his Club mate Andrew J went to his assistance only for them to become snagged together. Their boats were last seen drifting to the far bank when hopefully they were retrieved.

A very enjoyable morning with good close competition, a good breeze from the SW and not too cold.

All for now, this week is a NT week with a post Brexit Sunday for the IOM TIRYC Cup.

Cheers

Sunday 29th December 2019 DF95 TIRYC Bowl Round 1 Results

Hi Folks,

Round 1 of the 2019-2020 TIRYC Bowl for the DF95 yachts saw 10 of us hit the water today with quite a reasonable amount of wind passing over our course.  As is often the case the direction was less than ideal, coming
as it did from roughly South but curving around the obstacles South of the lake to provide us with a couple of almost windward legs from different directions.

Thus we started near the 'Western Gate' using the out mark and the safety bag as a start which, sadly, was never anywhere near ideal but the only leeward position where a line could be sighted. From there we went to the prime windward mark of Red 6; Red 7 was the next target which was also taken to Port before heading to Red 5; Red 6 and Red 5 were rounded again before finishing between Red 6 and a black bag on the point of the spit - which was as muddy as usual.

The first leg was predominantly a Port tack affair although Starboard had to be used at least once: the last leg was predominantly a Starboard tack approach with at least one Port tack somewhere on the leg.  Never the less there were lots of options as the wind swung and varied which resulted in numerous place changes and close finishes.

Mikes Ewart and Kemp had a morning long fight for first and second places ending up just one point apart with Mike E. in front.  We greeted a new 'occasional' member today, Roger Bowtle's home club is Lincoln but he has reason to visit near us from time to time so we can look forward to him sailing
with us now and then.

Cheers

Mike Kemp
