About Us
The Two Islands Radio Yacht Club was formed in late 1992 by a group of five or six skippers. During the club’s history we have hosted a number of important events including national championships and regional heats and continue to do so. The club hosted the UK IOM National Championships in June 2012. This attracted the very best skippers in the UK and Europe who competed over three days for the trophy.
Furzton Lake provides one of the best model yacht sailing facilities in the UK. We sail in a designated area of the lake by arrangement with the Milton Keynes Parks Trust. The lake is always weed free (a problem for some clubs in the Summer) and we have two control areas to use depending on the wind direction. Our buoys are permanently in place allowing for a variety of courses
We have over 30 members and the club has a strong program of competitive events sailed for on Sunday’s (starting at 10.00am) Most Sunday’s we race the most popular class in the UK, the International One Metre. One Sunday each month we race the latest boat to be introduced to radio sailing the Dragon Force65. Look at the Classes section of the website.
In addition to the regular Sunday programme we also sail on Wednesday mornings (around 10.30am) we sail a mixed fleet handicap format, normally made up of Dragon Force65s, RG65s and similar sized boats. This allows us to sail different boats in the same race with the handicap system allowing for different boat performances. These mornings are well attended and take a more casual approach to racing (but still to the rules). For those lucky enough to not be working we race for one and a half hours or so and then adjourn to the pub for a snack and a chat. All good fun.
Two Islands also has a close relationship with our nearest Club in Northampton, Abington Park MYC. They have developed a ‘home build’ yacht the Wee Nip, which is raced one Saturday each month, six months at Abington Park and six months at Two Islands. This boat is also often sailed in the Wednesday mixed fleet events
During the Summer months members also sail on Thursday evenings, good news for those that work who can take part in a few races on the early evening after work is done
The club is affiliated to the Model Yachting Association, the national body that develops and controls the sport in the UK.
If you are interested in the sport of model yacht racing please come along to the lake on a Sunday morning or a Wednesday morning and make yourself known, and we will be pleased to help in any way possible. Details of our location are here.
