New Guidelines for Sailing
The MYA have published new Guidelines for competitive sailing after liaison with the RYA and Government. Below is a summary of the main points of the document as it applies to Two Islands Radio Yacht Club.
Your Committee have reviewed the guidelines and have decided to continue with ‘social sailing’ as before with a plan to restart Trophy competitions from the 1st November (the new sailing year)
TIRYC have been adhering to government rules and guidance since restarting sailing. The requirements are however restated below :-
In a change the maximum number of skippers allowed to race together has now increased to 13 (up from 6). This number is to ensure that social distancing must be complied with (2 metres)
If more than 13 skippers attend then boats will be taken off of the water on a rotation basis to ensure that no more than 13 boats are on the water for any race
The control areas will therefore revert to the car park area and the spit as before depending on wind direction
Social distancing must be adhered to at all times (including boat assembly and set up) This is the most important responsibility for members to take on.Once a spot has been selected in the control area then the skipper MUST stay there, not walk around or move without cause
Chairs used to help maintain the social distance and to stop movement are recommended
Racing is to be conducted in a conservative manner with any shouts to be reduced to minimise any increased droplet transmission
Personal hygiene measures (such as hand washing) must be carried out at home before and after sailing activities
Participants must bring their own hand sanitiser and maintain strict and frequent hand hygiene measures at all times, the club will provide a sanitiser stand on most occasions
A temporary record of participants at each sailing event will be retained for any potential test and trace requirements
The safety bag will contain suitable PPE (masks and gloves) for use in providing first aid
If any member shows any sign of illness (even a cold but particularly Covid 19 symptoms) they MUST not attend the sailing session and should follow Government procedure.
Any participants who attend an event must report any post event infection within their household to a club Committee member
Each member must only touch their own boat/equipment
In the case of a boat becoming disabled or out of control an electric remote control rescue launch can be used to help along with a trailing line
The inflatable will only be launched if a boat is on an island and cannot be retrieved by any other means
On a final note and given that we have limited access to rescue facilities please can all skippers ensure that boats are well separated to minimise any possible contact, can they also give all buoys a wide berth to minimise any chance of boats snagging the buoy anchor lines.
We are social sailing so no aggressive manoeuvres should be considered. Full concentration on boat handling is a must with no external distractions (this includes mobile phones)
A Committee member will be designated to manage each sailing session with authority to set race courses and to confirm the rules
Please be aware that as part of the virus control there are no toilet facilities at the pavilion, these are closed and water has been shut off. Be aware before leaving home! The toilet is strictly out of bounds
Keeping to the Government regulations will ensure that the third party insurance via the MYA will be valid. Breaking these regulations would have the effect, in the event of an insurance claim being made by a third party, of invalidating the indemnity provided by the insurance
It is clear the aforementioned advice should not be breached by TIRYC Club or members
Please fully respect these rules in support of sailing

In the case of a boat becoming disabled or out of control an electric remote control rescue launch can be used to help along with a trailing line
The inflatable will only be launched if a boat is on an island and cannot be retrieved by any other means
- If the inflatable is used a suitably qualified Committee member must be present to ensure the boat is properly prepared for launching. The ‘front line’ Committee Members are Mike Ewart, Geoff Raygada and Rob Tottey who are first in line to supervise the launching of the boat. If they are not in attendance then another Committee member must supervise the preparation of the boat.
- We will not accept any urgent shortcut for the boat preparation from a member whose boat is disabled. The designated Committee member has complete authority over the launch procedure
- It is recognised that two members are needed to launch the boat. Only two members should be used to minimise contact. Individual hand sanitiser must be used once the boat is packed away and before leaving the lake
- Unless the disabled boat is on an island it must be left to drift to a bank regardless of how long that might take
On a final note and given that we have limited access to rescue facilities please can all skippers ensure that boats are well separated to minimise any possible contact, can they also give all buoys a wide berth to minimise any chance of boats snagging the buoy anchor lines.
